The Only Sense of Ground Left

The only sense of ground left is all about a site-specific landscape-based project I completed in my last year of university. The whole project centered around my home in Farndon that is built on a natural flood plain that floods multiple times yearly but within the last 5 years the flooding has become more unpredictable and more aggressive due to water levels rising, urbanization of natural flood plains and climate change. I approached this subject after my community was affected by the most severe floods on record during storm Christoph in January - February of 2020 where homes were damaged, livestock were killed, human lives were put at risk and riverbanks were destroyed by this severe flood. Being emersed in this extreme event put the effects of climate change into reality for me, This yearly phenomena was amazing 7-8 years ago but now we wait for the unpredictable, aggressive floods that once were natural but have now become unnatural in their behavior causing destruction, fear, and disorder.

Phoneline

Pencil drawing of one of the phone lines that sits in the hedge. This phone line acts as a guide when in full flood by being an indicator that there is a hedge there but also how high the water is.

The Footpath

Pencil drawing of the local footpath along the river edge before it becomes submerged.

The Last Post

Pencil drawing of a post that we use to gauge how high the water is at a certain point of the road to see whether we can wade out or kayak out.

Drypoint Etching
Cabin on the River

1.5x1.5 inch Drypoint Etching on 300gsm Somerset Satin Paper. This piece is the fourth of fifty drypoint etchings from my series 'The Only Sense of Ground Left' a project that focused on how climate change is increasing the severity of flooding in Britain.

My Back Garden

6x8.5 inch Drypoint Etching on 300gsm Somerset Satin Paper. This piece is the fourty eighth etching from my series 'The Only Sense of Ground Left' a project that focused on how climate change is increasing the severity of flooding in Britain.
